Rafael Coronel

June 14, 2018 by Allan Stephenson

Rafael Coronel  was born 1932 in Zacatecas. (died in 1985 ). He married Ruth, the daughter of Diego Rivera and Lupe Marin.

Art ran in the family. He was the younger brother of another great Mexican artist Pedro Coronel though his work was very different. His grandfather used to paint the decorations of many churches.

To me his paintings are either graphic like the ones above- or can be Rembrandt-ish with dark shadows and light like the ones below.

Anyone could put on a typical Coronel robe and cap to help view the painting better.

For more of Coronel’s work in his home town of  Zacatecas see here.
