I am glad we visited and stayed the night in Civita di Bagnoreggio some twenty five years ago. Now the town attracts many thousands of visitors every year and that popularity is a two edged sword. The visitors help to pay for the maintenance and restoration, though for the residents they must feel they live in a crowded museum,
The town is noted for its striking position on top of a plateau of volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley a few hours north of Rome in the region of the Crete Sensesi-literally the “clays of Siena”. It is in constant danger of destruction as the edges of the plateau collapse due to erosion, leaving the buildings to crumble as their underlying support falls away. The town is inhabited by only 16 people.
