The City of Durango is in the north of Mexico and was well placed to view the total eclipse of the Sun.
The city is high in the rugged mountains and there is a new spectacular highway that links it to Mazatlan on the coast. We did not travel that way but instead entered from the east through high desert.
Below part of a mural in the City Hall.
Like all Mexican cities it has the usual Plazas with a Cathedral and many other churches.
A festive atmosphere was present and in the main plaza bleachers were set up along with entertainment on stages.
Around the Plaza the usual colonnades with cafes.
We stayed at the Posada de Maria and it was a great place to stay if ever you find your self in this part of the world.
The hotel was originally part of a much larger house that the famous Mexican actress Dolores Del Rio was born in.
She was born in what is now the Mendoza Restaurant where we ate many a good meal with many a good Margarita
It is crowded with memorabilia
Below some other beautiful restaurants that were once grand houses
Below some charming streets in the city.
Below a coffee shop wall anticipates the event.
We claimed the roof of the hotel along with other eclipse watchers
As it came to almost full the light became quite strange.
The city turned to night but with a bright horizon.
Below my photos of the totality. Only at that time was it even possible.
After the great event we wandered around the town. In the market these items…
The area is known for its scorpions which are sometimes eaten.
John Wayne owned this place originally and used it for many westerns.

The north of Mexico was Pancho Villa territory during the Revolution of 1910.
These beautiful murals that tell the tale are in the Governors Palace
It was bad under Porfirio Diaz
But then it all got better !
