THE CITY OF ROCKS-IDAHO

Remote and hidden in the Albion Mountains of southern Idaho- like an ancient lost city in ruins- is the “City of Rocks” .

One travels first across endless sagebrush valleys and high hills before catching a distant glimpse of the white granite

The granite that composes most of the spires is part of the 28-million-year-old Almo pluton. However, some of the spires are made of granite that is part of the 2.5 billion-year-old Green Creek Complex that contains some of the oldest rocks in the western United States.

Granite spires 700 feet high provide challenges for rock climbers.

At dawn the light changes fast-just moments between these two shots.
